Description
A review of the knowledge, teaching materials, awareness-raising initiatives and social-responsibility against the risk of forest fires in existing educational programs will be carried out. The analysis of the state of the art will account for relevant national and regional experiences. This includes activities where children are supposed to be active agents of change in their spheres of influence – the household, school, community and beyond. The ‘ladder of participation’ is an effective method to assess the level of meaningful child and youth participation. The contribution of different schools chosen by the project partners in this regard will be of great importance. During the international workshop planned in A2.1, the results of this action will be presented accordingly to three different scenarios:
1) Preparation before the fire season: children and teens will build miniatures and will create models of Urban Interface Areas using recycled materials, according to their knowledge, for two simulated scenarios: areas resilient and non-resilient to forest fires.
2) In case a fire is getting near: fire will be applied in these two simulated models.
3) When choosing a homesite: differences in the spread of fire and its effects will be assessed under each scenario. Pupils will be able to identify and describe the best scenario to face the fire and detect the risks around their lives.
Expected results
The summary of the state of the art will be presented at the International Workshop (A2.1). This action will allow to identify existing knowledge and will allow to identify the gaps in terms of specific educational material and method.
